Spare Parts gears up for music from a variety of dance traditions --
from hot-rod contras to sleek English country to classic Victorian
ballroom. The group has performed at dance camps, festivals and dances
from Alaska to Maine. Liz Stell's driving flute and the syncopated piano
of Bill Matthiesen anchor the group. The roster of spare parts includes
Ruthie Dornfeld, Lissa Schneckenburger, Frank Orsini, George Wilson,
Donny MacLean, Mark Bagdon, Cathie Whitesides, Matt Glaser, Corey
DiMario, Rebecca McCallum and Eric Buddington.
Liz and Bill have recorded ragtime dance music on Now Tango. They also appear on George Wilson's recording Northern Melodies. For the German company Sonotone they recorded American Period Dance Music, background music for film and television, and for the Nahant Historical Society, they recorded a collection of dance music composed at or for Nahant, Massachusetts. Their recording The Civil War Ballroom (with piano, flute, violins, viola, mandolin, cornet, and bass) recreates the lively program from a mid-nineteenth century ball. Liz Stell has been playing for contradances for 25 years; along the way she's created a unique rhythmic flute style blending French Canadian, Cape Breton, and American with Celtic influences (plus a little rock-n-roll). Bill Matthiesen's versatile playing encompasses ragtime, early blues, and evocative tangos as well as contras and couple dances. His Waltz Books I, II, and III have become classics. Tango Viejo is Bill's solo piano recording of early Argentine tangos; many of these pieces appear in his new book Argentine Tangos for Keyboard (Mel Bay Publishing). evocative tangos as well as contra and couples dances.
